Can You Use an iPhone 17 Pro Case on the New iPhone 18 Pro? The answer isn’t quite as straightforward as it might seem. Yes, the old case will fit the new phone, because the official dimensions are identical. But I definitely won’t be doing that myself. My own tests clearly show something you can’t tell from the official specifications: the camera bump on the iPhone 18 Pro is slightly taller, which means older cases will provide noticeably less protection for the lenses. And that’s something I definitely don’t want.

The Mystery of the Taller Camera Bump

I admit, the whole thing is a bit of a mystery. So let’s take a closer look and try to untangle it. According to Apple’s official specifications, the dimensions of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro are identical: 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm. The design and position of the buttons have also remained unchanged — and if you look at online stores, you’ll very often find cases advertised for both models. Which would seem to lead to an important conclusion: the cases should be fully compatible.

But when you put an old case — Apple’s official Silicone Case, in my case — on the new phone, that theory starts to fall apart. The camera bump on the iPhone 18 Pro simply sticks out a little farther. It’s a small difference, and I wouldn’t dare to measure it precisely, but I’d estimate it at somewhere around 0.5–0.8 mm.

Yes, that sounds like a really small difference. But try it yourself: when you run your finger from the edge of the case toward the camera lenses, I guarantee you’ll feel a little uneasy. There is still some clearance between the lenses and the surface, but it is noticeably smaller. The lenses still won’t touch the table when you put the phone down, of course, but the clearance is clearly smaller than with the iPhone 17 Pro. And that makes me uncomfortable, because the case simply provides noticeably less protection for the lenses.

How is that possible? To be completely honest, I don’t know. It could be due to a subtle change in the overall construction of the iPhone, or the camera bump itself may have become slightly taller. As we know, this year’s Pro models gained a variable aperture on the main camera, which undoubtedly requires a little more space. (Just to be clear, Apple does not officially state that the cases are compatible and sells cases for the two generations separately.)

What to Do? Choose Your New Case Carefully

So what does all this mean? I suppose it will be a very individual decision, and I’m sure many people will simply shrug it off and continue using last year’s case without any problems. I won’t be one of them, though. I’ll choose my new case carefully, right there in the store. I always want to make sure the camera bump is properly protected. I use my iPhones a lot outdoors, so extra protection is essential for me.

So I’ll be looking for a case with raised edges that really protect the camera lenses — ideally, of course, Apple’s own official case, which I’ve happily used for years.

In short: there’s no need to make a big drama out of this, but it’s worth being aware of the difference and deciding accordingly, depending on how important maximum protection is to you. And of course, I’d be very interested to hear about your own experience!
